It's time to wrap up the past year in terms of karaoke, and boy, what a year it has been. Restaurants have faced exceptionally tough times due to the coronavirus and the resulting restrictions. The year had some impact on karaoke singing, but Finns still sang a lot. Restaurant owners came up with all sorts of creative ways to keep karaoke customers safe. Microphone disinfection machines were in demand, and various solutions, from Karita cloths to rubber gloves, were used as microphone covers. Hopefully, we're on the winning side now, and we can slowly turn our gaze to the karaoke year 2021.
We thought of putting together the most sung songs of the year again, but it got a bit out of hand. So, here are eight lists that show what and who has been sung at different times. Get your trivia here!
Once again, domestic productions are strongly represented in the most-sung list. However, breaking into the top five among Finnish songs is Lady Gaga's "Shallow" from the movie A Star Is Born. At the top is the highly popular version by Lauri Tähkä of Antti Tuisku's song "Blaablaa (en kuule sanaakaan)," which gained popularity through the Vain Elämää program.
The list of domestic songs looks very similar to the previous one—for an obvious reason. Making it to the tenth place this year is the beautiful song "Enkeleitä Toisillemme" by the late Jope Ruonansuu.
Two songs from the same movie soundtrack have risen to the top of the foreign list. A Star is Born has truly been immensely popular among karaoke enthusiasts! Additionally, the list includes various hits and classics. The only song on the list not sung in English is Rammstein's "Du Hast."
In the spring, the Regional State Administrative Agencies ordered the closure of restaurants until they were allowed to reopen from the beginning of June. It was interesting to see what people were singing on this first day when karaoke could resume in restaurants. At the top is the tender "Hei Rakas" released in 2019 by BEHM. BEHM, who released their debut album this year, has gained tremendous popularity among Finnish karaoke singers.
On Midsummer, the silver moon shines, and home-made wine tastes sweet. During the celebration of midsummer, there is a strong inclination towards domestic productions and national romanticism in song choices, and the established Finnish hits entertain time after time. At the top is a gem like "Moskovan Valot" (Moscow Lights); it remains a small question mark for the Feelment team as to how this particular song gained such great popularity on Midsummer. Let us know if you have any insights!
We anticipated that on Independence Day, song choices would exude pride for the homeland, but this list surpassed expectations with its patriotism. The hits of the day have stepped aside as the celebration proudly honors independence.
On the eve, the list is, unsurprisingly, Christmas song-focused, but a few other songs have also made their way in. To our delight, we have added new "Raskasta Joulua" songs to our karaoke selection for this Christmas, with the original backgrounds, of course. It seems that one song from the ranks of "Raskasta Joulua" has already found its way onto this list. Wonderful!
As the cherry on top, the most-sung artists of the year based on the number of singing sessions. Familiar names, fantastic bands, and artists. This is a great way to conclude the year's recap!
